What’s The Difference Between “Wholesale Member” and “Retail Customer”?
Setting up your own account with Young Living allows you to order when you like and have product shipped directly to you. First, there are two types of accounts to choose from – “wholesale member” and “retail customer”. You are not required to sell anything or make monthly orders with either option. Order what you want, when you want! Here’s a breakdown of the differences…

- Pay retail prices (24% more than wholesale, sort of like shopping at Target)
- Does NOT require the purchase of a Starter Kit
- NOT eligible to join Essential Rewards and earn points toward free product
- NOT eligible to earn bonus checks/commissions for referring others to Young Living

- Pay wholesale prices (24% less than retail, sort of like shopping at Costco)
- Requires the purchase of a Starter Kit
- Eligible to join Essential Rewards and earn points toward free product (optional)
- Eligible to earn bonus checks/commissions when you refer others to Young Living
- NO membership fees – order $50 per year to stay active (if you go inactive, order $50 in product to reactivate you account when you’re ready, so really, no catch at all!)
- NO requirement to sell the oils
How do I determine which type of account is better for me?
The bottom line here is that “wholesale customer” is definitely the better deal in the long run, which is why it’s the most popular choice even for those just ordering for personal use. Most people prefer to spend less, regardless of if they want to take advantage of the other ways to maximize their dollar. If you just want to try a product or two, retail customer may be a good temporary option, but again, look at the cost difference. If the difference between the wholesale and retail price equals $40 or more, you’ve already covered the cost of purchasing a Basic Starter Kit and becoming a wholesale member, so you might as well go that route and pay wholesale (less) for any future orders.
What is a “Starter Kit”?
A “Starter Kit” is the thing you need to purchase to get your wholesale membership. The good thing is you’re not just paying a membership fee like you do at Costco or Sam’s Club, you’re actually getting stuff! There are a variety of options, but the most cost effective option is the “Premium Starter Kit” with the Everyday Oils ($160), due to its value and versatility. If you ordered all the oils in this kit individually in 15 ml bottles, you’d pay $300-$400, plus a diffuser ($84 retail) so this is a great deal offered to new members! There are literally hundreds of uses for these 10 oils from safe, toxin free alternatives to personal care items, household cleaners, children’s bath & body products and pet products to supporting the body in achieving emotional and physical wellness. This kit allows you to try some different things out and order more of what YOU like. There are other starter kit options as well – chat with the person who introduced you to YL if you’re not sure which one is best for you!
What is the “Essential Rewards” program?
This is an optional program designed to help people who order product regularly save money and offset expenses. It’s also a favorite of the bargain hunters, coupon clippers, and dig-to-the-bottom-of-the-clearance-bin shoppers. It’s definitely the way to go if you’re looking to make long term changes to your health, are committed to helping your family “go natural” in the products you use every day, or are interested in sharing Young Living with others. It is NOT an autoship program where you end up with piles of product you don’t know what to do with and have to pawn off on the neighbors. YOU have complete control and can modify it when and how you wish. You choose which products you’d like and can get different ones each month. As a member of this program, Young Living also sets up a product bank account for you where you earn dollars on each order that you can cash in for free product. You also choose the date you’d like the order to process each month, and the address you want the product sent to. When you’re part of this program, Young Living also pays for part of the shipping for you. Members of Essential Rewards also receive reduced pricing on special product bundles and priority on product that may be running low. For many families, it’s easier to budget smaller amounts on a monthly basis than to make larger purchases every few months, so this is a great way to get more bang for your buck while meeting your budget.
I see it on the member sign-up page – do I need to join Essential Rewards right away?
No, you can start and stop the program as you wish, and you don’t have to choose one of the pre-made kits you see on the sign-up page. If you’d prefer to select your own products, just check the “No thank you” box and you can join later. If you start Essential Rewards and want to stop, make sure to redeem your points first!
Here’s the step-by-step process!
Step 1: If another Scentsible Oiler referred you to this website, please contact them for their member number to use as your “enroller” and “sponsor” on the Young Living become a member page. Make sure that the enroller and sponsor numbers are filled in with your referral’s number. Step 2: Make sure that “wholesale member” is selected!
Step 3: Fill out the form (The reason they ask for your SSN# is for tax purposes. As a “wholesale member”, you’re eligible to receive bonuses and commissions for referring others to these products. Whether you have intentions to do this or not, you’re eligible to earn an income, so just like you do for your job, SSN# must be provided. If you never enroll another person in Young Living, it’s never used.)
Step 4: Make sure you jot down your username, password and 4-digit pin # as you’ll need that information to log into your account to place future orders.
Step 5: Select the “Premium Starter Kit” for $160 with the Everyday Oils and choose your diffuser.
Step 6: Set up your first Essential Rewards order if you see a kit you like, or click “no thank you I plan to enroll later” and you can start anytime and choose whichever individual products you’d like to order. There are great reasons to participate in this program, but you don’t have to decide right now!
Step 7: Add any additional products you’d like and then click “check out”. You’re kit is on the way and you are now a member! Now you’re able to order at wholesale prices whenever you like.
